Saber-rattling between Time-Warner Cable and New Corp.’s Fox continues as the two have not settled their dispute over rates that the TWC will pay News Corp for Fox and its associated channels (Fox News, FX, etc., etc.). If all goes down as threatened, when the New Year rings in, it will be without any Fox channels on TWC.

Happy New Year everyone.
If you didn’t go to a New Year’s Eve party last night, I’m betting you helped ring in 2010 with your television on. Why? Because watching the ball drop in New York’s Times Square has become a tradition for people coast to coast. What’s more, TV viewing appears to be on the rise.
If you need proof of the latter assertion, look no further than Deloitte’s 2009 “State of Media Democracy” survey. According to it, Americans are increasingly ranking television as their favorite type of media to consume. The survey, released in mid-December, bases its findings on responses from just over 2,000 people, and Deloitte reports that more than 70 percent of respondents ranked TV viewing among their three favorite media activities. Thirty-four percent of them ranked it No. 1.
Why TV is seeing an upswing in popularity is debatable, but the Deloitte folks seem to think the dismal economy and television’s relatively cheap buy in are playing a big part. This makes sense to me, but I’d love to hear your thoughts, so post them below.

The annual CES (Consumer Electronics Show) is held in Las Vegas every January. The next CES will be held from January 7-10, 2010. This is the event where consumer electronics manufacturers, retailers, and journalists gather every year to see not only what products will be available in the coming year, but to see prototypes of future products that are still in development. The Annual CES is organized by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the largest trade organization for consumer electronics manufacturers, retailers, and others associated with that industry.
This year CES is in its 43rd Year. The first CES was held in New York City in 1967 with 17,000 attendees and 150,000 square feet of exhibit space. Since that time, the CES has grown to well over 100,000 attendees and takes up over 2 million square feet of exhibit space, including the entire Las Vegas Convention Center, The Venetian, and space in surrounding Hotels, including the Hilton and the Wynn.
Some of the landmark technologies and products that have had their official debuts at CES:
1970: The Videocassette Recorder (VCR)
1974: The Laserdisc Player
1981: The Camcorder, Compact Disc Player
1996: DVD
1997: The Plasma TV
1998: HDTV
1999: Hard-disc Video Recorder (PVR/DVR)
2000: Digital Audio Radio (DAR)
2001: Microsoft Xbox
2002: Home Media Server
2003: Blu-Ray Disc, HDTV PVR
2004: HD Radio
2005: IPTV
2007: Wireless HDMI
What will be the big thing at this year’s CES? 3D will certainly be in the spotlight, and the impact of the current economic downturn will certainly be a continued topic of discussion, as it was last year. Also, new developments in LCD Television technology, such as more application of LED backlighting will certainly be of interest, especially in light of California’s decision to regulate TV power consumption.
In addition, great strides continue to be made in video projectors in both increased performance and affordability. Convergence products, such as network Blu-ray Disc players, media players/extenders, media servers, and whole house systems will also be highlighted. In addition, expanded exhibit space for home theater and high performance audio products will be featured.
